When I was a kid and staying at a friend’s house, his mother said she needed to speak with me privately. She sat me down and said that just because I realized Santa wasn’t real, I couldn’t go around school ruining it for everyone else.

That was not me. I hadn’t been doing that, and I continued to believe in Santa… © CodeExtra9664 / Reddit

My mother’s ex (who I formerly considered my “real mother”) informed me a few years ago that she wanted to adopt me after my mother and her broke up. She stated that my mother and stepmother kept me so that they could file larger tax returns. The last statement could be incorrect, but I also know my parents were materialistic and maintained the image of being “good parents.” © blinddivine / Reddit

When I was about 11, my mother told me that my father told her that she needed to shed 10 pounds before he would propose. Despite my rose-colored glasses, I felt compelled to question my father directly for the real tale. He confirmed it and laughed, as if it was still funny. They weren’t good for each other, and it was probably one of the first experiences I had that revealed who my father truly was. © h0pper95 / Reddit

My mother informed me on her deathbed, three years after my father ᴅɪᴇᴅ, that he might not be my biological father. They apparently struggled to create me, so their doctor suggested them to find a donor and then have him inseminate my mother. © NiciVac / Reddit

I’ve always known I was adopted. My parents said that I came from a family that had previously had all of their children. They lived a few towns over. I was surprised.

Three years ago, my wife decided to have a DNA test. I figured I would, too.

When the tests came back, we discovered I had a first cousin. They had listed a public email address. I emailed them, we started comparing notes, and wham! I was in for a big surprise.

First, I was not born into a regular family. Instead, my biological mother was single. Second, I wasn’t a late addition. I have four sisters and a brother. I was the baby, though only by a few years. Third, almost all of them lived nearby. Finally, nobody knew I was still alive!

My biological mom had ᴅɪᴇᴅ. She kept the pregnancy a secret from everyone else. Before she ᴅɪᴇᴅ, she told one of my biological sisters that she had a baby a long time ago and had put it up for adoption. She told no one else.

When did my sister tell the rest of the family? They did not believe her! So when I eventually looked them up, she said, “See! All these years! I told you so! “We have a baby brother!”

I had no idea what I was getting into when I sent off that DNA test. © ExistentialismFTW / Reddit

My buddy informed me that she married her husband not for love, but to become his widow and inherit his fortune. So I assured her it was fine because he was 20 years older and she could take care of him if he got sick. However, she stated that she would not care for him because she despised elderly people. I couldn’t believe what she said; I was too surprised.

Her husband divorced her a few years later, and she received no monetary settlement. © MastodonOld1960 / Reddit

I’m 37, and my father calls and asks, “Can you come over tomorrow? I need to talk to you about something.” When I arrive, my parents sit me down and tell me, “Fourteen years before you were born, and before we were married, we had a son. He was adopted by a family in Sweden, and he’ll be here in half an hour.” Cue the longest and oddest two hours of my life. © Smart_A**_Dave / Reddit

My mother acknowledged that my family couldn’t afford to correct my father’s vasectomy, and my younger brother is a sperm bank kid. I’m the only one who knows, aside from my parents. © samladyjam / Reddit

My girlfriend of 11 years, who had two children from a previous marriage, came out as a ʟᴇsʙɪᴀɴ. Yes, I am aware of the term “straight spouse.” It shook my universe. © InterestingPotato315 / Reddit

My father told me that he was not laid off from his work. He simply stopped going to work because his ex’s father was working on the same ship as him. Instead of requesting for a transfer or speaking with the supervisor, my father simply stopped going.

We lost our home in ’05 or ’07, I suppose, and he claimed he was laid off. I was 10 or 11, and dad only recently told me this. I’m 28 now, and I’ve lost practically all respect for him since. © MrTumorI / Reddit

My grandmother and her nine siblings are very close. So when they each received a call claiming a family member had ᴅɪᴇᴅ and they had inherited a significant quantity of money, they assumed it was a scam. It turns out their stern father had a secret ᴀғғᴀɪʀ and another child, Marie.

Well, Marie, now in her 80s, had ᴅɪᴇᴅ, as had her husband. They had no children. So my grandma and her siblings were my closest relatives. And that’s how ten people in their 70s and 80s (including myself) discovered their father had cheated on their mother and had a half-sister they’d never met. © Individualchaotin / Reddit

A few years ago, I was talking with my cousin, and he told me that immediately before my grandfather died, he told my eldest uncle that he had an affair, and the woman had a child. My father and his younger brother are completely unaware of my half-uncle, who lives somewhere in my tiny hometown. © swagpotato** / Reddit
