Nothing beats shedding tears when watching an emotive film. It’s interesting how movies can bring out aspects of yourself that you thought were solely reserved for real-life situations — the d3ath of a loved one, breakups, when the wine bottle is empty, and so on. And, while it may be difficult to admit, there are moments when you simply need to cry. Instead of breaking up with your significant other or finishing the final bottle of wine, why not watch one of these five movies that will make you cry harder than Titanic?
1. ‘A Monster Calls’
This movie from 2017 is heartbreakingly sad. Based on Patrick Ness’s illustrated book, a little boy named Conor (played beautifully by Lewis MacDougall) is bullied at school because life is cruel, and he creates a “monster” (voiced by Liam Neeson) in his head that ends up helping him deal with his grief over his mother’s terminal cancer diagnosis. You’ll start crying within the first few minutes of this film and won’t stop until long after it’s over.
2. ‘The Big Sick’
What is the good news about this movie? You’ll laugh in portions. What about the negative news? YOU WILL CRY A LOT, especially after learning that it is based on the true love story of Kumail Nanjiani (who acts in the film) and his now-wife, Emily (played by Zoe Kazan). In The Big Sick, Nanjiani falls in love with Emily, much to the displeasure of his Pakistani family, only to have their relationship end when they hit a stumbling block. But then Emily becomes seriously ill, and Nanjiani pays her a visit to the hospital, where he befriends her parents (who are not pleased that he broke their daughter’s heart). You will dissolve into a puddle of tears during the entire film, yet short pause to giggle every once in a while.
3. ‘The Fault In Our Stars’
The number of tissues you’ll need while viewing The Fault In Our Stars is practically limitless. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort play Hazel and Augustus, two adolescents who meet at a cancer support group and decide to travel around the world to meet their favorite author. All while coping with cancer. Believe me, you *will* feel things after seeing this film.
4. ‘Brokeback Mountain’
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger play Jack and Ennis, two cowboys who fall in love in Wyoming in the 1960s. But, of course, the two guys must hide their love, which will break your heart. When Jack tells Ennis, “I wish I knew how to quit you,” I guarantee you’ll cry.
5. ‘Moonlight’
Do you want to feel like you’ve just been hit in the stomach? Go see Moonlight, a film about a troubled young man (at three chronological periods of his life) who fights with his sexuality in a rough neighborhood and has a drug-addicted mother. Yes, it is as intense as it sounds, and yes, you will be GUTTED.
